The Diabetes Cookbook $25 Over 195 million people around the world are having to change the way they eat to beat Type 2 diabetes. To date they have been remarkably badly served by cookbook publishers (DK included!). Most illustrated books for this market are slim volumes offering a limited selection of recipes. Like everyone who enjoys good food, individuals affected by diabetes deserve an inspiring photographic everyday recipe book that gives plenty of choice. The Diabetes Cookbook does just this. It offers over 250 recipes with variations, organized into chapters that reflect the way we eat today. For every recipe, the recommended portions are carefully calculated and tie into a simple points system that allows you to calculate your daily intake of glucose, saturated fat, good cholesterol and fiber. Supporting these recipes is a carefully thought-out section that explains why diabetics should adjust their diet, and the easiest way to do this. So often it is difficult to make the leap from nutritional theory to what you actually put on your plate. DK pull out the salient information and illustrate it in graphic spreads that makes the important adjustments crystal clear. For readers who like to be prescribed exactly what to eat, the two 4-week meal plans (“A New Way of Eating” and “The Sustainable Weight-Loss Plan), suggest what to prepare for breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks for a healthy balanced diet. GI charts and lists of “Appetizing Alternatives” complete the volume giving those affected by Type 2 Diabetes a cookbook that promises eating can continue to be one of life’s great pleasures, as well as the most important part of a treatment plan.
